Alpha a&e Policies from 1st March 2025

This details the main changes to the updated policy wording. It does not contain a record of every amendment or those made to individual client policies. Please ensure that you read in full any documentation provided in conjunction with the updated policy wording to determine the full terms, conditions, limitations, and exclusions of the policy cover.

IPID Changes

Under the exclusions of cover there have been changes and additions:

  • Removal of exclusion of cover if you chose or were recommended to quarantine or isolate as a result of exposure to an infectious disease including COVID-19, unless you have paid the additional premium for the COVID-19 Extension.
  • Addition of exclusion of travelling against the advice of a medical practitioner or travelling with the intention of obtaining medical or dental treatment or consultation abroad.
  • There is no cover at any time for quad bikes, electronic scooters, ATVs, e-bikes or segways.

Under the section ‘How do I cancel the contract?’, there has been a change made to the refund on premium:

  • Following the expiry of your 14-day cancellation period, you continue to have the right to cancel your policy at any time during its term by contacting us, but no premium will be refunded, unless in exceptional circumstances and agreed by us. Any refund agreed will be calculated on a sliding scale.

Policy Wording Changes

Under the cancelling or amending your policy section an addition has been made:

  • However, discretion may be exercised in exceptional circumstances to provide a refund for unused cover, those exceptional circumstances being bereavement or an unexpected change to your policy resulting in us being unable to continue covering you providing you have not made a claim on the policy or are intending to make a claim, and refund is subject to an administration fee.

Under the Policy Information section, the recovery of fraudulent claim expenses is expounded:

  • We may inform the police or the appropriate authorities of the circumstances and may incur external costs or expenses to investigate the fraud. For any claim found to be fraudulent, we may seek to recover such external costs or expenses from you.

Under the Making a Claim section there has been a change to the requirements to contact the Emergency Medical Assistance service:

  • You must contact the medical emergency service once you know you will be in a medical facility overnight.

Under the claims evidence section there has been a change in respect of the covid-19 test evidence as below:

  • Evidence that your lateral flow test is positive if claiming for covid-19.

Under the general definitions of the policy, a new immediate relative definition has been added:

  • Legal next of kin

Under the trip disruption before you travel section, there have been changes in cover:

  • The distinguishment between covid-19 and non-covid-19 related cover has been removed
  • Yours or your travelling companion’s passport, visa or any other document that is required to leave the UK are stolen within 7 days of when you are due to depart from the UK.

Under the trip disruption before you travel exclusions, there have been changes made to exclusions:

  • Claims arising because a government has imposed travel restrictions in your home country or abroad that impact your travel plans. Such as, but not limited to; locking down geographical regions, making your travel illegal, revoking visas, or closing borders.
  • Removal of claim cover if you purchase this policy or book a trip after you test positive for covid-19 and the start date of your trip is within 14 days.
  • Removal of claim cover where you have tested positive for covid-19 and the only evidence of this is a test taken at home that is not independently verified.
  • Claims when self-isolation is not mandated by a medical practitioner, the NHS, or any UK government body.

Under the delay and abandonment section there has been a change made to the reasons for delay:

  • The technical fault or breakdown of public transport when the fault or breakdown originated on the public transport you are travelling on, including bird strikes.

Under the delay and abandonment exclusions there have been changes in cover:

  • Claims arising because a government has imposed travel restrictions in your home country or abroad that impact your travel plans. Such as, but not limited to; locking down geographical regions, making your travel illegal, revoking visas, or closing borders.
  • If you travelled against a non-essential advisory from the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and the cause of the claim is related to the advisory.

Under the missed departure section there has been a change made to the delay or cancellation reasons:

  • The technical fault or breakdown of public transport when the fault or breakdown originated on the public transport you are travelling on, including bird strikes.

Under the missed departure exclusions there has been a change made to exclusions:

  • Claims arising because a government has imposed travel restrictions in your home country or abroad that impact your travel plans. Such as, but not limited to; locking down geographical regions, making your travel illegal, revoking visas, or closing borders.
  • If you travelled against a non-essential advisory from the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and the cause of the claim is related to the advisory.

Under the missed departure and connection section there has been a change made to the delay or cancellation reasons:

  • The technical fault or breakdown of public transport when the fault or breakdown originated on the public transport you are travelling on, including bird strikes.

Under the missed departure and connection exclusions there has been a change made to exclusions:

  • Claims arising because a government has imposed travel restrictions in your home country or abroad that impact your travel plans. Such as, but not limited to; locking down geographical regions, making your travel illegal, revoking visas, or closing borders.
  • If you are making a claim under ‘Travel Documents are lost or stolen whilst you are outside the UK’ you must have a valid claim under the Personal Belongings section.

Under the substitute accommodation exclusions there has been a change made to exclusions:

  • Claims arising because a government has imposed travel restrictions to the geographical location you live in the UK or that impact your trip, such as, but not limited to; locking down geographical regions, making your travel illegal, revoking visas, or closing borders. This excludes travel advice issued by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.

Under the cutting short your trip section there has been a change in cover:

  • The distinguishment between covid-19 and non-covid-19 related cover has been removed

Under the cutting short your trip exclusions there has been a change made to exclusions:

  • Claims arising because a government has imposed travel restrictions to the geographical location you live in the UK or that impact your trip, such as, but not limited to; locking down geographical regions, making your travel illegal, revoking visas, or closing borders. This excludes travel advice issued by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.
  • Claims if you purchase this policy or book a trip after you test positive for covid-19 and this led to your illness/hospitalisation.

Under the medical sections of cover, there is new contact information for outpatient treatment:

  • Any claim arising as a result of you driving a motor car/motor vehicle or riding a motorcycle unless the appropriate licence is held by the driver of the vehicle e.g. a full UK driving licence, or a valid CBT certificate (DL196). The licence/certificate must be relevant to the vehicle in use. You must be following the local road safety laws, be driving/riding on recognised roads and in respect of motorcycling the engine capacity must be 125cc or lower.
  • Riding or use of quad bikes, ATVs, electronic scooters, e-bikes or segways are not covered at any time.

Under the personal accident section there has been a change to exclusions:

  • Any claim arising as a result of you driving a motor car/motor vehicle or riding a motorcycle unless the appropriate licence is held by the driver of the vehicle e.g. a full UK driving licence, or a valid CBT certificate (DL196). The licence/certificate must be relevant to the vehicle in use.   • You owning, possessing, or using a firearm, a horse drawn, mechanical or motorised vehicle, including pedal cycles, electric cycles and scooters (and any or towed vehicles), any waterborne vessel or craft (except manually propelled watercraft), an aircraft of any description, including unpowered flight and drones.
  • Any damages caused by any vehicle battery malfunction (whilst charging or not)

Under the legal expenses exclusions there have been changes made to the cover of motorised vehicles:

  • Any claim arising as a result of you driving a motor car/motor vehicle or riding a motorcycle unless the appropriate licence is held by the driver of the vehicle e.g. a full UK driving licence, or a valid CBT certificate (DL196). Under Personal Accident or Personal Liability, there have been changes made to the exclusions of sports or activities:

  • Canoeing/Kayaking/Rafting/White Water Rafting grade 4 and above
  • E-bikes are not covered at any time
  • Riding Motorcycles/Mopeds (above 125cc only)
  • You must be wearing a helmet and riding on recognised roads. You (or the driver if you are a passenger) must be in possession of a valid licence/certificate for the motorcycle in use.

Under the Sports and Activities NOT covered section, there have been changes made to the exclusions of sports and activities:

  • Canoeing/Kayaking/Rafting/White Water Rafting grade 5 and 6
  • Removal of Riding Motorcycles/Mopeds (above 125cc only)
  • Removal of Quad Biking/ATV’s

Covid-19 Extension

There is a new section called Travelling Companion Not Insured With Us:

  • Any costs or expenses for a person not insured by this policy. For example, if you pay for someone else’s accommodation and have to cancel the trip. You won’t be able to claim for ‘the person who you are travelling with’ accommodation costs.

Under the Claims Evidence section, there has been a change to required documentation:

  • Evidence that your lateral flow test is positive.
  • You no longer need to provide written confirmation that you have been contacted by official NHS Track and Trace or a medical practitioner for Covid-19 within 14 days of the start of your trip.

Under the General Definitions, there is an addition to immediate relatives:

  • Legal next of kin

Under the Cancelling Your Trip section, there is a change in exclusions:

  • Claims arising because any government has imposed travel restrictions to the geographical location you live in the UK or are travelling to such as, but not limited to, locking down geographical regions, making your travel illegal, revoking visas, or closing borders. This excludes travel advice issued by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.

Under the Missed Departure section there is a change in exclusions:

  • Claims arising because a government taking action to restrict travel, such as, but not limited to, locking down a geographical region, closing borders, or making your travel illegal.

Under the Cutting Short Your Trip section there is a change in exclusions:

  • Claims arising because a government taking action to restrict travel, such as, but not limited to, locking down a geographical region, closing borders, or making your travel illegal.
  • If you purchase this policy or book a trip after receiving a positive COVID-19 test result and this has led to your illness/hospitalisation or requirement to self-isolate.

Cruise Extension

There is a new section called Travelling Companion Not Insured With Us:

  • Any costs or expenses for a person not insured by this policy. For example, if you pay for someone else’s accommodation and have to cancel the trip. You won’t be able to claim for ‘the person who you are travelling with’ accommodation costs.

Under the Claims Evidence section, there has been a change to required documentation:

  • You no longer need to provide written confirmation of positive test results for Covid-19 provided by an independent authority including the date of the result.

Under the Cruise Extension Sections of Cover, there is a new definition:

  • Timetable Restrictions - Whilst you are on your cruise, the cruise ship is running behind schedule and elects to miss a port to make up time

Under the Cruise Extension Exclusions, there is a new exclusion of cover:

  • Any claim caused by an epidemic or pandemic

Under the Missed Departure and Missed Connection section, there has been a change to the delay or cancellation reasons:

  • The technical fault or breakdown of any public transport which delays the scheduled departure of your pre-booked transport, when the fault or breakdown originated on the public transport you are travelling on, including bird strikes.

Large Scale Events Extension

There is a new section called Travelling Companion Not Insured With Us:

  • Any costs or expenses for a person not insured by this policy. For example, if you pay for someone else’s accommodation and have to cancel the trip. You won’t be able to claim for ‘the person who you are travelling with’ accommodation costs.

Under the General Definitions, there is an addition to immediate relatives:

Under the Cancelling Your Trip section, there has been a removal of an exclusion:

  • Any claim arising from Covid-19

  • You must take reasonable steps to protect your gadgets from loss, theft, or damage. Do not leave your baggage unattended. There is no cover if your belongings are lost, stolen, damaged or destroyed while unattended.
  • Gadgets should be carried with you whenever possible. Gadgets that are lost or damaged when checked into the hold or left unattended unless the public transport carrier insists, they are checked in.
  • When you are not traveling and not present in your accommodation, gadgets not taken with you must be kept in a locked safety deposit. If no safety deposit box is available, they must be stored out of plain view.
  • You must report lost or stolen items within 48 hours to the police and provide us with a police report. If your baggage goes missing while in the custody of a transport provider, you need to obtain a property irregularity report from them. This includes bags that are delayed in transit.

Golf Extension

Under the emergency medical expenses and medical repatriation section – If you need emergency medical treatment abroad & If you need to be brought home, an addition has been made to medical repatriation:

  • In the event that we are medically repatriating you and you have no pre-booked and paid return trip, the cost of the economy flight(s) will be deducted from your claim.

Under the money and travel documents section, there is no cover for:

  • Losses arising due to debit or credit card fraud or any unauthorised use of such cards.

Extension changes

Large Scale Events extension

Under the policy extension information there has been a new definition added as below:

  • TRAVELLING COMPANIONS NOT INSURED WITH US - This policy does not cover any costs or expenses for a person not insured by this policy. For example, if you pay for someone else’s accommodation and have to cancel the trip. You won’t be able to claim for ‘the person who you are travelling with’ accommodation costs.

Under the delay and abandonment section – If you are delayed:

  • The delay benefit is now applied for your whole trip and not each time you are delayed. Customers will be able to claim for cancelled departure or additional transport costs, but not both. For detailed terms of each section, refer to the wording.

  • If you are on the outward leg of your journey (to your pre-booked final destination) from the UK and delayed by at least 12 hours due to one of the reasons listed, you can claim for unused travel and accommodation costs.

  • In the event that we are medically repatriating you and you have no pre-booked and paid return trip, the cost of the economy flight(s) will be deducted from your claim.

Delay and Abandonment If you are delayed
